*Just for kicks,\u00a0<\/span>Billboard\u00a0<\/span>decided to rank the top R&B\/hip-hop artists, songs and albums over the past six decades.\u00a0After crunching the numbers, Motown legends\u00a0<\/span>The Temptations<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/span>Michael Jackson\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThriller\u201d and theMary J. Blige<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>track \u201cBe Without You\u201d are the genre\u2019s top all-time artist, album and song, respectively.<\/p>\n

The Temptations topped the list, having tallied a record 16 No. 1s on the Top R&B\/Hip-Hop Albums chart (which began in 1965) and 14 leaders on the Hot R&B\/Hip-Hop Songs chart (which dates to 1958), including its longest-leading hit single, the eight-week No. 1 \u201cAin\u2019t Too Proud to Beg\u201d in 1966. The act scored 43 top 10s, including in each decade from the \u201960s through the \u201990s.<\/p>\n

Aretha Franklin<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>is the No. 2 artist (and top female), followed by\u00a0<\/span>Stevie Wonder<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(top male) at No. 3, with the two icons sharing the record for the most No. 1s \u2013 20 each \u2013 on Hot R&B\/Hip-Hop Songs.\u00a0<\/span>James Brown<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>(No. 4) and Michael Jackson (No. 5) round out the artist list\u2019s top five.<\/p>\n

Among primarily rap artists, Drake ranks the highest at No. 19, followed by Jay Z at No. 20.<\/p>\n

Jackson\u2019s \u201cThriller\u201d leads the all-time albums list after having spent a record 37 weeks at No. 1 on Top R&B\/Hip-Hop Albums in 1983-84. The\u00a0<\/span>Black Eyed Peas<\/strong>\u2018 2009 set \u201cThe E.N.D.\u201d ranks at No. 2 and Jackson\u2019s \u201cOff the Wall,\u201d from 1979, places at No. 3. Rounding out the top five are\u00a0<\/span>Whitney Houston\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>self-titled 1985 debut (No. 4) and\u00a0<\/span>M.C. Hammer\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cPlease Hammer Don\u2019t Hurt \u2018Em\u201d (No. 5), the top rap album.<\/p>\n

Blige\u2019s \u201cBe Without You\u201d is the all-time No. 1 R&B\/hip-hop song, powered by its 15-week reign on Hot R&B\/Hip-Hop Songs in 2006.\u00a0<\/span>Macklemore & Ryan Lewis<\/strong>\u2018 debut \u201cThrift Shop\u201d (featuring\u00a0<\/span>Wanz<\/strong>), a 14-week Hot R&B\/Hip-Hop Songs topper in 2013, follows at No. 2 \u2013 and is the highest-ranking rap title \u2013 while Usher\u2019s 11-week 1997 No. 1 \u201cYou Make Me Wanna\u2026\u201d places third. At Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, are\u00a0<\/span>Marvin Gaye\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cSexual Healing\u201d (No. 1 for 10 weeks in 1982-83) and\u00a0<\/span>Deborah Cox\u2019s<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cNobody\u2019s Supposed to Be Here\u201d (No. 1, 14 weeks, 1998-99).<\/p>\n
